A central aim of the counsellor is to reduce the negative impacts or unhelpful defences against internal conflict, by helping the client to recognise and think about unconscious dynamics that are at play. This aim is hopefully achieved by making internal objects, inner worlds and their workings, more available or accessible to the client. It is hoped that by doing so, any distress a person is experiencing will be reduced. It is not necessarily the explicit aim 45 S A L LY H O D G E S that the client’s behaviour will be changed, although it is hoped that identifying the meaning in behaviours will allow for a more helpful expression of feelings.

Denise always seems to talk as if she has nothing to worry about and denies ever feeling any upset or distress. She often says ‘leave me alone, I don’t want or need your help’ to the staff.
