Although being loud, sarcastic, intimidating, or even just unnecessarily tough may not actually serve men well, other men will often overlook, accept, or even forgive their behavior. Not so for women. Women who engage in this type of behavior quickly get labeled "bitch," although rarely to their face, by the men with whom they are negotiating. Avoid the "Me perspective," that is, looking at issues from your viewpoint rather than considering them from the other person's point of view. Talking to people who know the industry and understand the issues can give you insight into how the other side looks at things. Sometimes it helps to have an informal meeting before you actually start negotiating. This also gives you a chance to discuss how the negotiations will proceed, to figure out what the issues are, or simply to get to know each other a little better.
